       National Service Scheme —— NSS is an educational programme. It is a student oriented programme. It inculcates the spirit of voluntering among the students through community interaction.
Education is the action or process of educating or of being educated.
National Service Scheme (NSS) was launched during 1969, the birth centenary year of Mahatma Gandhi, in 37 Universities involving 40000 students. NSS is an extension of dimension to the higher education system to orient the student youth to community service while they are studying in educational institutions.

Aim:

    The motto of NSS is “NOT ME BUT YOU”. The aim was that national or social service be introduced, on a voluntary basis and extended as widely as possible and that it should provide a rich varied programme of activities which would provide for an imaginative approach to youth. It was also felt that the programme should start from the upper primary stage and continue up to the University, so that right attitudes were developed from an early age and every young person was ultimately brought within its orbit. It was to provide opportunities for involvement of students in community work as considered at various levels and eventually the Ministry of Education and Youth Service, Government of India decided to launch the National Service Scheme during 1969 – 70.
To instill among its volunteers the value of democratic living, equality of opportunity and selfless service towards the less privileged than themselves.
Aims to develop in its volunteer’s dedication towards community service based on a sense of social justice and welfare. Thereby preparing them to become agents of social change.

“Serving back to the society is not merely our duty but also our passion and responsibility”.

Specific Objective:

⦁ To arouse the student’s social conscience and to provide him with the opportunities.
⦁ To work with and among people.
⦁ To enhance his knowledge of himself and the community through a confrontation with reality.
⦁ To engage in creative and constructive social action.
⦁ To gain skills in the exercise of democratic leadership.
⦁ To gain skills in programme development to enable him to organize programmes for meeting the community needs with ultimate aim of finding self-employment.

NSS Symbol:

    The Konark wheel in the NSS badge having 8 bars signifies the Zuhrs of the day, reminding the wearer to be ready for the service of the nation around the clock i.e. for 24 hours.
    Red colour indicates NSS Volunteers are active, energetic and full of spirit.
Blue colour indicates the cosmos of which NSS is acting part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.
Portrays the cycle of creating, preservation and release signifying movement of life across time and space and also signifies the progressive cycle of life which stands for continuity as well as change.
    The central aim of the NSS is to provide hands on experience to young students in delivering community service.
We at National Service Scheme unit can proudly say that we believed, we initiated, and we made a difference. NSS Unit provides a platform to the students and faculty for community work and developing a sense of involvement in the tasks of nations building. Throughout the session activities are organized which channelize the energy and idealism of the younger generation into creative pursuits.
      Various projects are being undertaken like project Parivartan, this aims at promoting the advantages and regular practice of yoga among society.
      National Service Scheme is beneficial to both students as well as society in various ways, helps the student to grow individually and also as a group. It makes the student confident, develop leadership skills and gain knowledge about different people from different works of life.
NSS attempts to establish meaningful linkages between University and Society, Campus and Community, College and Village, Knowledge and Action.

NSS Volunteers:
           Any student enrolled as NSS Volunteers should put in at least pohrs of social work in a year for continuous period of 2 years i.e. 240 hours in two years.
         He should participate fully in the programmes organized and should be fully conversant with objectives of NSS.
The NSS Volunteers should establish rapport with the people in the village adapted. Identify the needs, problems and resources of the community.
       They should plan programmes and carry out the plans.
      The NSS Volunteers should relate his learning experiences towards finding solutions to the problems identifies.
     Thus, the objective of the NSS Scheme are personality development and social service. It is intended that as a result of the student’s involvement in the scheme, their perception and realistic appraisal of social reality would be definitely enhanced.
      The programmes and activities that are undertaken by NSS aimed towards giving and educational experience to the student. And this educational experience alone will ultimately help them to develop their personality.
      We, Dr. Rafiq Zakaria College for Women is and always strive to achieve excellence through quality education by providing the right academic ambience for overall development of all the students so they progress upwards.
        Our NSS Unit, along with staff, non-teaching staff and NSS Volunteers participate in all the activities undertaken by NSS Unit. We have (NSS Unit) has organized Tree Plantation Drive, Blood Donation Camps, Awareness Camps, Health Camps, Village Vaccination Drive and many more activities.
        We shall and always follow the footprint of Dr. Rafiq Zakaria Sahab and Padmashree Madam Fatma Rafiq Zakaria who has laid the foundation of our prestigious institution with under Maulana Azad Education Society & Trust.
